This looks at the famous story of Carl’s first day at school and the problem of adding together the first 100 numbers given to him by his teacher. We then look at how Carl may have tackled this problem by considering simpler cases first (1 to 10). The idea is to give the students the opportunity to discover it for themselves. Ones established we use some algebra to look at the general case. We then link this to triangular numbers. There are printable worksheets at the back (including the story).
