Designing a Garden

Functional Maths PowerPoint Presentation

Designing a Garden

"This really is the best Functional Maths stuff around and is saving us a lot of hard work" DB, Head of Maths, Range High School, Specialist Mathematics School"

A functional skills/maths PowerPoint presentation on Garden Design.

Stuart and Sarah are moving into their new house next month and they would like some help from you in designing their garden. They have made a simple initial design on their computer which they would like you to look over to see if it's OK and to check a few of the measurements and calculations for them. They have a scale drawing that you can use. Perhaps you could also help them with the placement of some additional features that they are considering adding (bird bath, footbath, ornamental statue and an extra flower bed). They are also a bit worried about the overall cost so maybe you can advise on this too!

This is basically the scenario that is presented to students at the start of the presentation and they have to work their way through all 40 questions. The first 20 or so questions involve measurement and calculations from the supplied scale drawing of the garden. This is followed by a series of loci- type questions, all of which have animated solutions on screen. All construction lines are included so that you can refer to them if needed. We finish off by looking at the estimated costs involved with designing the garden.

This presentation covers the majority of the functional maths "coverage and range" at both levels 1 and 2. Towards the end there are printable student question sheets/teacher Q + A sheets and all the worksheets that are needed. This is an excellent and comprehensive resource on functional maths that you can pick up and run with very easily.
