Functional Mathematics PowerPoint Presentation
Another very nice presentation that covers a large portion of the functional maths "coverage and range" at both levels 1 and 2 with 40 carefully targeted questions.
We start off by explaining that postage costs are a function of both size and weight. We use an animated post office size guide to make things as simple as possible for the students. Animated envelopes of variuos sizes are introduced on top of the guide so that they can practice using the it to classify items as letter, large letter or packet. A table introduces all the current prices for each type and there are plenty of searching questions about it. A particular question asks them to come up with the best approach to posting a single A4 sheet through the post. We then move on to sending parcels and all the restrictions on these are clearly shown and the students have to solve a variety of problems involving these. Other elements include finding unknown lengths in cuboidal and cylindrical parcels by reference to the table of length/weight restrictions. This is followed by some questions on a large table of Parcel costs. This shows maximum weight and timings (by 0900, 1000, 1200, <24 hrs, <48 hrs). A variety of problems are posed.
Contains printable teacher Q + A sheets, student question sheets and all the worksheets that you need. If you weren’t sure about costs at the post office, all will become clear!!
