Differentiation Maths PowerPoint Presentation.
The presentation starts by reviewing the gradient of a straight line and discussing how we might calculate the gradient of a point P on a non-linear curve. We explain with the aid of an animated diagram how the gradient of the chord QP = gradient of the tangent at P = gradient of the curve at P (in the limit) as Q moves towards P and becomes co-incident with it.
We use this result to find the equation of the tangent line at a point P from first principles for both a quadratic and a cubic. All the usual symbols and terminology is introduced. Finally we discover the rule to differentiate a polynomial f(x) term by term. Question sheet and worksheet provided.
