Fermat's Two Square Theorem |
Enrichment PowerPoint Presentation
Understanding of The Sieve of Eratosthenes is a pre-requisite for this presentation.
This is designed to allow students to discover Fermats famous Two-Square Theorem, for themselves. That is, all primes of the form 4n + 1 are expressible as the sum of two square numbers. Although the proof of this cannot be understood by anyone other than an expert mathematician, the proof that primes of the form 4n + 3 cannot be expressed as the sum of two squares is within reach of the more able student. There is no reason why bright students (with some preparation) at primary/elementary/middle school should not access this.
