Classic Greek Proofs (Number Theory) |
Enrichment PowerPoint Presentation
This presentation examines three of the classic Greek proofs on number theory and should be seen (and perhaps re - played individually) by every intelligent student. We take a look at two of Euclids proofs from book IX of the Elements, namely The Fundamental Theorem of Arithmetic and the Infinity of Primes. We also look at his proof (attributable to Pythagoras) of the Irrationality of Root 2. Why and when and who decided that this sort of mathematics was no longer fashionable? If it excited the likes of Hobbes, Fermat, Descartes, Pascal, Lincoln, Einstein and others why are we not showing it today?
