"This really is the best Functional Maths stuff around and is saving us a lot of hard work" DB, Head of Maths, Range High School, Specialist Mathematics School"
A Functional Skills Maths Presentation.
The presentation starts by looking at three possible itineraries for completing the 192 mile walk from St Bees Head on the Irish Sea coast, to Robin Hood’s Bay on the North Sea Coast. Lots of questions follow based on the displayed table. The three national Parks involved during the walk are discussed and there are several questions relating to this. We then follow Stuart and his son up hill and down dale as they cross the country over a 19 day period. A wide variety of questions (33) are used, from working out prices, costings for the complete trip, calculating distance travelled, use of Naismith’s Rule for journey time in mountainous terrain to using the “distance to the horizon” formula at the summit of Helvellyn. This will be an enjoyable presentation to deliver and should generate a lot of interest from students. Contains printable teacher Q+A sheets/student question sheets and all worksheets towards the end.
