Angles 9a (Eratosthenes: Earth Measure) |
Shape and Space Powerpoint Presentation
The use of "alternate angles" was a key feature in the measurement of the circumference of the Earth by Eratosthenes and that is why it has been included here. A fascinating story that demonstrates why the Ancient Greeks thought the Earth was spherical. Briefly discusses the fall of Athens and the rise of Alexandria. A clear explanation of latitude and longitude has been built in, in order to help the students get to grips with the problem more easily. Takes the students through the problem step-by-step and builds in the opportunity for them to work it out by themselves once they have enough information. Needs to be done with selected groups. A good one for when you're asked "what's the point of this"
