The main objective of this simple investigation is to ensure that students understand that shapes with the same perimeter can contain different areas. With regard to drawing the shapes, it would be hoped that they can see (after a period of time), how to get from one shape with a perimeter of 16 units to another with a slight modification of the first as shown below.
Maximum and minimum areas enclosed should be discussed from their table of results. The final task could be regarded as extension work if needed.
You may want to do the whole task on pencil and paper rather than use a pinboard. Hence the printable sheet of grids at slide 7.
